Everything in the universe is the same matter. It makes one realize how big is not so big afterall. This is my second time coming to look at these two photos. I just keep thinking wow.

  3. Charles Perrt 02 November, 06 @ 12:25 pm

We all know what galaxies look like, but how the they know what the universe looks like as a whole? and if this is true is it possible that there are other universes like there are other galaxies?

  4. Justin Ruckman 02 November, 06 @ 12:58 pm

Charles: “They” are the Virgo Consortium and the image above (+ many others) was produced from the “Millenium Simulation”.

But yeah. It’s turtles all the way down. In a turtle-shaped pond …

We think of a brain cell as small because in relation to us it is, the same goes for our perception of the universe. This similarity just makes me wonder if something else out there could be looking at the universe in the same way that we look at the brain cell. Size is relative after all.

  6. Jessica 13 November, 06 @ 6:15 am

    nu neeee nu nu

*couldn’t resist after your comment richard about size being relative to that of the beholder. Kind of like the Cat’s galaxy collar in Men in black… :)

“Apophenia is the spontaneous perception of connections and meaningfulness of unrelated phenomena. The term was coined by K. Conrad in 1958 (Brugger).”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apophenia

    http://www.skepdic.com/apophenia.html

  8. Justin Ruckman 01 September, 07 @ 1:53 am

Drew: they say apophenia, in advanced stages at least, is a component of psychosis. If that’s psychotic I don’t wanna be sane. :)

  9. Drew 01 September, 07 @ 4:15 pm

To be clear, Justin, you’re saying that you want to see unrelated phenomema as related? You want to see “meaningful messages in such things as a stopped clock, the angle of an open safety pin, and the angle formed by two postcards lying on the floor,” for example? James Pike thought these exact signs were conveying the time his son had shot himself. That sound about right to you?

  10. Justin Ruckman 01 September, 07 @ 7:38 pm

Drew: there are extremes to any mode of perception that fall outside the range of practicality. I’m only saying there is probably a lot more meaning and symmetry in things than we allow ourself to be aware of. Who’s to say what is related and unrelated in any kind of definite sense?

  11. kerry dalton 04 October, 07 @ 7:19 am

    is the universe a brain?

  12. Drew 04 October, 07 @ 3:41 pm

Yes, kerry, yes it is. Though apparently it’s the brain of a schizophrenic.

  13. me 05 October, 07 @ 9:05 pm

like i said before, the universe is expanding, but our mind is not…..

  14. Dylan 02 January, 08 @ 1:40 am

Yeah, the mind is also expanding! We learn new stuff every day!

  15. Redmond 22 January, 08 @ 4:00 pm

It makes you wonder doesn’t it?
Is there really some omnipotent being with a plan for us?

  16. Justin 20 April, 08 @ 10:26 pm

Well it makes since to me, if God is the universe than we are just a micro Cell of God’s brain. I don’t know just a weird thought.

  17. Justin Ruckman 25 April, 08 @ 9:07 am

    Justin: It’s not so weird.

  18. Jared 30 April, 08 @ 8:48 am

To really think about it makes me cringe. I love it though. To think about how umimportant a brain cell is to a human and then think about the universe being one in itself makes me try to imagine what brain we are a part of. To what being are we inside. Could it be a god, technically it would be a god. We would technically be a part of another being, meaning that being created us, meaning god is true.

That would be a wierd day, the day science proves God is real and we are part of him haha.

  19. Justin Robicheaux 06 May, 08 @ 9:35 pm

It would also prove that we are some type of universal host ourselves and the we truly are all connected together. Could explain most of our reality. “Cell theory” to an extent.

  20. Justin Robicheaux 06 May, 08 @ 9:36 pm

    that*

  21. Jacob 14 May, 08 @ 8:19 am

Makes me wonder about the quote from the bible, “We are created in the image and likeness of our creator…”

  22. Jose Jimenez 29 October, 08 @ 5:50 pm

I’ll pvt it to yov gvys this way: a solar star is the macro eqvivalence of an atom, which has electrons and all sorts of particles hovering arovnd (moons, radiation, clovds, gases). We are within a greater organism and there are others organisms within ovrselves.

  23. kelsey diane 12 November, 08 @ 4:49 pm

god says that he’ll come back some day reincarnated and i think this is his message. I believe that the universe is god’s brain cell, and that he is trying to send us a message that he is here among us. And if this universe really is his brain cell then what if our brain has a complete other universe inside us?

just something to think about ..

  24. Bora Eliacik 14 November, 08 @ 7:13 am

    JOSE,

I think the very same way. I wanna make one addition to that: I beleive that there is a circular relationship that means the brain cell can be the universe itself.

I came to this conclusion during a discussion with my son. It was 3 years ago and he was 6 years old. He told me that:
“Dad, they say that the space is boundless. But this does not make sense to me. I beleive people makes an assumption just because they are incapable to reach its boundaries. But when I assume this, I wonder what covers the space? And what covers the space’s cover? This brings me to the original situation where I need to accept something with no boundaries.”

I replied him with my circular relationship theory, he did not get it. I hope you guys understand it :)

  25. Adzzz Dunn 23 November, 08 @ 11:43 pm

That is insane in the membrane!!

it feels crazy to look at something e.g. your hand and think “i’m peering into an infinity.”

I’m canny high though so this probs isn’t gonna make sense tomorrow.

    Must sleep!

  26. dazmo 09 December, 08 @ 8:15 am

    as above, so below.

  27. Justin Robicheaux 11 December, 08 @ 10:44 am

“He’s got the whole world in his hands”.

  28. asad 30 December, 08 @ 6:34 am

“what is the meaning of life?” may be that the whole universe is alive. and brain is just a small but very powerful part of it.
May be that life is only a illusion and it is just a tiny part of any great and complex phenomenon, which may be in turn a part of even more complex process or phenomenon.”

  29. Jimmy L 13 March, 09 @ 7:45 pm

I saw a vision of this a couple of days ago, i did not know anything about this topic. It blows my mind how individualy insagnificant we are, if every purson on this planet thought of the same thing at the same time whould not the universe as a brain somehow understand ? If that makes any sense, but that whould mean thers universes iside of our head too, at first I started comparing my vision of a universe as being an atom but further research led me here.

  30. James 13 March, 09 @ 10:51 pm

If the universe is a brain cell then what ar we?

  31. JAMES 24 March, 09 @ 7:54 am

Life, knowledge, understanding, Questions, reality what is reality? Science, facts Its real. Nothing is real nothing is perfect. Where from how. theory is everything. Why? never ending numbers, letters, cycles
decomposing, nature wilderness, you are getting lost. Where? More questions. you have the answers right in front of you. We, We are all lost. What are we doing. going where. wherever it is we were meant to go there. Human bodies real not real. Our understanding, behaviours, life existant, non existant. what am I, you, anyone, What is this, me, everything. More questions, More answers or not, why instinct Brain cells=universes universes=more brain cells which equals life through galaxies Brain storm. Music = answers. Answers equals more questions. Questions of science. You matter we matter, really no or maybe yes. But why and how. Hot, cold, feelings are just drugs. Hunger, thoughts, noise = more drugs. Halusagenic drugs, criminal minds minds with answers. Visibility. The law of attraction. Thinking, negative or no just posotive, how? Gravity, separation, color real yes. What is yes. Key to understanding. Pathways, portals thoughts. boggling, minds. mind blowing, Beliefs, evidence none, or yes. A belief is not a thought that is held by the mind. It is a thought that holds the mind. Supernatural, just the natural undefined/undescribed. The end, there is none. isnt one, Questions That is just it the universe period. think about it.

have you ever seen a picture of the map of the internet? it looks the same way. how about a map of our highway system? have you ever seen a satalites view of earth @ night? the lights look just like the universe or brain cells. it is a logical way for information physcial or intellectual to flow. its so perfect that for humans its pure instict. however its also mother naturs, science, god or whatevers format. viruses use it too so do certain growths such as a trees roots or ants in the ground. its imbedded in everything around us. it is like dna the footprint of the universe.
ever since I was a young boy I have doodled the pattern that we have been discusing here. I have been infacuated with it for as long as I can remember.

  33. david 11 April, 09 @ 7:41 am

its the simple designs that are so beautiful and perfect

  34. Anson 14 June, 09 @ 12:02 am

    Hey guys!
I am very new to this subject, but I find it extremely interesting.
I took “Earth, Space Science” in Junior High (as well as many other sciences thereafter) and I must agree that I think much of today’s opinions on the subject often focus on specifics based on a flawed theory.
I watched a show on the History Channel recently that rated “Humans” as the highest level of a “super organism.” While I believe that we are a “super organism”, I don’t believe we are the highest form, hence we are just an organisms (albeit a higher form than others). The highest of all organisms would be a “perfect organism”. In my opinion, a “perfect organism” must to have certain identifying characteristics. The presence of these characteristics in the simplest form possible, functioning together would exhibit the most signature trait of a “perfect organism”: BALANCE!
In a “perfect organism” exhibiting “balance”, these are some of the characteristics which should be observed (feel free to add others if you think they should be in this list):
    A “Perfect Organism”
    Postule 1:
It “creates” and “wastes”. However, nothing “new” is ever created or wasted. It is a perfect “recycler.” It is self sufficient in EVERY conceivable way. It does not receive anything (in any form) from outside itself, nor does it give up anything (in any form). It cannot be impacted in any way, nor can it impact anything else. Its signature characteristic is balance!!
    Postule 2:
In order for “Pustule 1″ to be “TRUE”, then the following are probably be true (feel free to add others if you think they should be in this list):
    1. There was and will have always been only ONE true “Perfect Organism”. It CANNOT replicate in any way. It is the only one of any kind!!
    2. This “Perfect Organism” still exists today exactly and as perfectly as it existed thousands or millions or billions of years ago; also it is actually the only “thing” in existence. Humans, the earth and all the other “organisms” are to “IT” as the myriad of bacteria in our GI tract is to a human being: DEPENDENT!
    3. This “Perfect Organism” is vast beyond imagination, so simple it is complex and perplexing to us and has neither a beginning nor end.
    4. It is composed of (among other things) vast “galaxies” with innumerable amounts of organisms exhibiting some of its characteristics at innumerable degrees of evolution. However, note that all of these organisms (whether we might consider it dead or alive), have a life cycle and are dependent or impacted on something else in some way.
    5. It does not exist in “Time”. Time can be measured within it but not outside of it.
    6. Although inconceivable to us, it is fixed in size. Because we are so small in comparison to its vastness, it appears to be growing or moving. But this growth or movement a phenomenon comparable to the movement of the earth’s surface; just an example of its “recycling” characteristic.

O.o wow just wow. I wish I did not come here… Now my brain feels odd…

  36. Ola 16 September, 09 @ 12:33 pm

who says the mind is like the brain

  37. scott 09 October, 09 @ 1:12 am

    That’s Just Fantesticle!

lol Theres a universe in that stained rat’s brain!

But why must conversation like this usually have something about a “god”?

Explaining our existance w/ a magical fantasy miracle is lazy. When there is just so much more possibility in having something progressive and beautiful to figure out.

but sick photo ..good convo starter X)

  38. Valderialoempia 01 November, 09 @ 8:49 am

So actually, as I am wondering if the universe is just somebody’s brain cel, there also could be some weird civilication inside MY braincel thinking exactly the same thing :S

It’s just a big infinitive circle, perhaps the brain cel and universe are just the same thing, we live in ourselfs :P
Would be funny actually if that was true, you just have to poke a finger into your bran cell and it would reappear upon our sky..

  39. Conner Harkness 23 December, 09 @ 4:24 am

Well if the universe keeps expanding.. And our minds keep expanding.. Well, you know. We also forget things, too.. I hope we won’t be forgotten.

  40. Will 23 February, 10 @ 5:31 am

Roads and walking tracks are like viens and the people walking/driving along them are the blood cells pumping along. But where is the heart…Trippy aye.

  41. Stacey 01 March, 10 @ 2:59 pm

we are all children of the universe.

  42. Sean 03 April, 10 @ 2:38 pm

If each of our brain cells is a universe, then what does that make every other cell in our bodies?

And what exactly happens when our bodies begin to decay after death…

I believe that the complexity of life is such that we as humans will never be able to understand it, only question it.

Every human quality or emotion, such as curiosity, must be kept within its boundaries. Only love is boundless.

  43. Brain cell 11 April, 10 @ 4:27 am

So in fact we’re just someone’s braincell, that’s an interesting thought..

  44. Jeff 19 April, 10 @ 3:07 am

The universe is large enough that in terms of probability there will be life out there. Maybe too far away to get to now, hopefully not ever though, and maybe they aren’t as smart as humanity, maybe they’re superior to us in every sense, maybe it’s just bacteria or plants but any life still counts as a miracle. To think that the molecules that make our DNA, which give us life, can be the components of of planet or a star. We are so small and insignificant compared to the grand scheme of the universe especially if there is other life out there and yet here we are. Not just living but are the rulers within our own abilities. It is an opportunity to appreciate everything on a more modest yet by simply existing it makes us important.

  45. Rex 30 April, 10 @ 1:33 pm

We are thoughts… simple as that.

  46. thomas 03 May, 10 @ 1:27 pm

Wow. I first first came to this idea back in 2003. I was fresh out of hs……and to just read all of these comments it made me realize that I am not alone, and all of our minds ponder the same idea. To me this is absolute truth. We r all connected. There is some being way beyond us and possibly a being beyond that…….. its just so infinate. A person can go crazy with this knowledge. Y didn’t I come here sooner. Haha. But we can’t ignore the fact that there is evil in our known universe. As there is evil within ourselves. After all each and every one of us is a universe unto ourselves. We have to understand who we really r first b4 we understand the universe

  47. www.myspace.com/tonejacker 20 May, 10 @ 10:17 pm

very good reply. the universe could be a frequency. i think its really cool to think that we are a part of a resonance that creates energy. whatever we are, it is fact that we are a product of matter and anti-matter colliding and creating a spark. anything that creates energy could potentiall create life. because life is energy. “Man lives in curiosity, but curiosity killed the cat..” humans should stick with what they know about energy, emotion. love and gratitude are the most powerful things and are proven to resonate all the water molecules in our body, creating beautiful snowflakes.
its true, some scientist blessed water and criogenically froze it. i dont think something has a big plan for us, it is up to us to make our own plan. reproduce. teach our kids not to be idiots and believe in chassic religions so they have a chance to believe in themselves.

  48. jyfgj 21 May, 10 @ 6:56 pm

    matrioshka

  49. adamhq 29 September, 10 @ 6:44 pm

okay heres something to think about, parrallell univeses … if this universe is a single brain cell inside a much greater being, and the mind has millions of brain cells, maybe those are the parralel universes we speak of as it is said there are Millions of paralel universes .. possibley a link ? that could also explain dreams, you could be looking into one of the little brain cell univeses!

  50. Does it matter? 16 October, 10 @ 10:49 pm

Too much. Now the question is what happens when we die does nothing because a new brain cell is created.

  51. EdwardMS 28 March, 11 @ 8:10 pm

So yeah . . . this picture is pretty amazing when you think deeply about it.

To Jose, I believe it’s deeper then that! I was taking the bus one day and noticed something very interesting . . . I seen a Mother walking in the city with her Kid, and it struck me funny that Kid was walking around his Mom! like an Atom or our Solar system.

Now, what would this say about our very nature ?

The Secret of success concerning beauty might really hold true! we gravitate to the most adorable, pretty , shiny objects!

So in a deep philosophical way we are obeying the Laws of Nature no matter what we do.

    I love the picture!

  52. Sam 20 June, 11 @ 11:51 am

I think this could create a new religeon. What if thers not just one god but millions living on a ginormous planet. And imagine we’re gods for smaller people and so on and so forth. We are just a speck in a “brain cell,” but how many brains cells are in our brain? How many universes in our brain? It’s very possibe just like any other religeon. I think this would be more probbible considering the science aspect. Think about…

  53. Hixxy 26 February, 12 @ 6:28 pm

    Well there’s a spec of thought!!!LOL
